“Seeds of Discovery” is showing at the San Diego Book Arts Third National Juried Exhibition. This year’s juror is Kitty Maryatt,The exhibition will be on display at the Geisel Library at the University of California at San Diego from May 29 to July 4, 2010, with an opening reception on the afternoon of Saturday, May 29.

“Seeds of Discovery’--a fable honoring the unique nature of each one of us--emerged in response to that ancient query, "Who are you?" and an assertion attributed to Asvaghosha: "The mind as phenomenon is grounded on the tathagata-garbha, what is called the storehouse of consciousness." From such elements, Curt developed his text, and out of that text, Margaret's monotypes of desert seeds brought the fable to vivid fruition. The flutter book structure seemed natural for the story's ethereal grounding, as did the wrapper protecting and containing the germ within.

“Old Pueblo Doors” is showing May 14 - June 25: Inventive Structures: Books Beyond the Codex. A national exhibition juried by Hedi Kyle. Opening reception: Friday, May 14, 5-7 pm.

“In the history of the book, the codex gradually replaced the scroll and the accordion book. Pages connected to the spine, in the codex form, facilitate immediate and random access to the contents. Compact and portable, this complex device can hardly be improved upon for handling and storage. It still remains the preferred format.

“However, as with all mono cultures, a price has been paid with a loss of diversity and surprise. These are precisely the possibilities that we would like to explore in this exhibition. Book forms outside of the codex realm are the focal point of this show. With an emphasis on innovative alternatives, the expansiveness and structural integrity of these books will challenge the codex” Hedi Kyle
